Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday demanded a probe into alleged corruption, nepotism and political favouritism in fertiliser dealer appointments, calling for punishment of those responsible.

At a press briefing at the party’s Moghbazar central office, Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar blamed government mismanagement for fertiliser shortages.

He alleged that dealerships had been awarded in violation of rules, with some appointments based on lists submitted on political party letterheads.

He also claimed that money had been exchanged for dealerships, fake warehouse documents used and multiple family members given appointments.

Irregular distribution, black-market sales and smuggling had worsened shortages, he said, citing alleged irregularities in Dinajpur and Badarganj in Rangpur.

Referring to an investigation by The Dissent, Parwar claimed shortages had been reported in the constituencies of 14 BNP MPs. He also alleged that some dealers had no prior experience in the fertiliser trade and that a list submitted on BNP letterhead in Pirgachha, Rangpur, included leaders of the Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party.

Jamaat demanded publication of dealer eligibility criteria and appointment lists, a probe into alleged financial transactions, legal action against those involved and public disclosure of the investigation’s progress.

Parwar also alleged rising politicisation and corruption in government over the past six to seven months, saying shortages of fertiliser, oil, gas and electricity were increasing production costs and fuelling commodity prices.

He urged the government to ease public hardship and called for opposition participation in constitutional reform through parliamentary discussions.
