India has formally launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term, pledging to champion the interests of the Global South, strengthen multilateralism and promote international peace and security.

Speaking at the launch of India's candidature, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the world was facing unprecedented levels of conflict, violence and instability, making a more effective and responsive United Nations essential.

He said India's vision centred on building a secure, peaceful and equitable world where the voices of developing nations are heard, terrorism is effectively tackled, maritime security is strengthened and climate action advances alongside sustainable development.

Jaishankar said India would pursue these priorities through what he described as the SHANTI approach—an acronym for Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity—emphasising respect for international rules and collective progress.

Highlighting India's credentials, he pointed to the country's extensive peacekeeping record, with nearly 300,000 personnel deployed in about 50 UN missions and more than 4,300 personnel currently serving in 10 active missions.

He also underscored India's commitment to reforming global governance, advancing responsible artificial intelligence, safeguarding maritime commerce and combating terrorism by disrupting terror financing.

The minister also cited India's humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, development partnerships and support for food, health and energy security across developing countries as evidence of its commitment to global well-being.

Concluding his address, Jaishankar appealed to UN member states to back India's candidature, saying its presence on the Security Council would strengthen the body's decision-making and contribute to a more secure, stable and prosperous world.
