Muslims in India’s West Bengal have reportedly stopped purchasing cattle ahead of Eid-ul-Azha following a decision by the state government, leaving many Hindu cattle traders in financial distress.

Traders who invested significant money and effort in raising cattle now fear heavy losses due to falling sales.

Agnimitra Paul, the Minister for Women and Child Welfare, said that the issue is being closely monitored by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Speaking to journalists after a cabinet meeting on Monday, Agnimitra Paul said the chief minister is personally reviewing the situation and that the state government is expected to take a specific decision soon.

She added that Suvendu Adhikari himself would provide details regarding the matter.

Many members of the Hindu community in West Bengal traditionally raise cattle specifically for sale during Eid-ul-Azha, and such activities had not previously faced major obstacles.

However, the BJP-led government under Suvendu Adhikari recently issued a directive stating that no cattle or buffalo may be slaughtered without permission. The directive also reportedly set a minimum age requirement of 14 years for cattle slaughter.
