West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday warned of strict action against those involved in vandalism at the Jahangir Mohalla police outpost in Asansol during protests against loudspeaker regulations at religious places.
Speaking to reporters after an administrative
meeting at the government tourist lodge “Sagarika” in Diamond Harbour, Suvendu
strongly condemned the violence and said seven people had already been arrested
in connection with the incident, Sangbad Pratidin reported.
He said the government would follow a “zero
tolerance” approach similar to the “Yogi model” associated with Yogi
Adityanath, particularly in dealing with attacks on public property and law
enforcement agencies.
“Those who vandalised the police outpost will face
legal action. The damage caused to government property will be recovered from
the accused,” Suvendu said, referring to provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya
Sanhita (BNS).
The chief minister also warned against any attacks
on police personnel or government institutions, saying authorities would not
show leniency in such cases.
The administrative meeting in Diamond Harbour was
attended by senior district officials, including the South 24 Parganas district
magistrate, the superintendent of police of Diamond Harbour Police District and
Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal.
Earlier in the day, Minister Agnimitra Paul also
condemned the incident and said the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita would be
implemented strictly across the state.
She said no one would be allowed to create public
inconvenience or block roads in the name of religion, and added that sound
pollution rules regarding loudspeakers would be enforced equally for all
communities.
Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage to
identify others involved in the violence, while a large police deployment has
been made in the area to maintain law and order.
