The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to remove Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the One Day International captain, with multiple board sources confirming to Daily Sun on Monday that Litton Das is the frontrunner to take charge of the 50-over side.
Towhid Hridoy is expected to be named vice-captain across white-ball formats, while Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue to lead the Test side, restoring Bangladesh's two-captain structure with separate leaders for red- and white-ball formats.
The matter is expected to be discussed and approved during the BCB board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.
According to sources, the board considered handing the ODI captaincy back to Shanto. However, it eventually preferred having one skipper for both limited-overs formats, with Litton already serving as the T20 captain, and Shanto focused on leading the Test side. The board also sees Hridoy as a future potential captain. The middle-order batter captained Bangladesh in the recent T20 International series against Australia, before guiding the Tigers to a 2-1 comeback series victory over Zimbabwe after losing the opening match.
Miraz was appointed Bangladesh's ODI captain on 12 June, 2025, replacing Shanto, and his tenure was extended by the BCB in April this year through to the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
However, Bangladesh's results under his leadership have failed to meet expectations, particularly away from home.
Of the 13 ODIs Bangladesh played overseas under Miraz's tutelage, the Tigers managed to win only two.
His appointment had marked the return of three different captains across the three international formats, with Shanto leading in Tests, Miraz ODIs and Litton T20Is. That experiment now appears set to end after little more than a year.
Should the proposal receive formal approval on Tuesday, Bangladesh will once again operate with two captains, with Litton leading both white-ball formats and Shanto remaining at the helm of the Test side.
Bangladesh last followed a two-captain model before Miraz's reign.
The country had previously deployed three captains in 2022, when Shakib Al Hasan led the Test side, Tamim Iqbal skippered the ODI team and Mahmudullah was in charge of the T20I outfit.
