The first Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium is primed for a grandstand finish. With Bangladesh leading by 179 runs and seven wickets in hand, the final day hinges on a high-stakes tactical gamble.
Bangladesh intend to accelerate during Tuesday's opening session, aiming to set a target of 260–270 and leaving Pakistan roughly 75 overs to chase. Batting coach Mohammad Ashraful believes this window is sufficient for his bowlers to secure victory.
"We are definitely playing to win," Ashraful stated. "With our spin and fast bowling attack, if we can bowl 70–75 overs, we will have a chance. You still need to bat well on this wicket... if you don’t bat well in the third innings, the result can still go against you."
Ashraful praised the fourth-day resilience of Mominul Haque and Najmul Hossain Shanto, whose 100-run partnership steadied the hosts after early jitters. "The plan was simple," he added, noting that veteran Mushfiqur Rahim also looked sharp in punishing loose deliveries.
Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha, however, met the proposed target with a cheeky challenge.
"If they are brave enough to give us 70 overs and 260, we will definitely go for the chase—but I don’t think they will do that," Agha remarked with a smile.
The Pakistan middle-order batter suggested that Bangladesh’s safest route would be to bat Pakistan out of the game entirely before declaring.
"I’m not saying they are not brave enough," Agha later clarified.

"I’m just saying the best option for them is to take us out of the game first. But if they do give us 260 or 270 in 70 overs, we are in the game. I personally want them to do that." With 98 overs remaining in the match, the question remains: will Bangladesh back their bowlers with a sporting declaration, or will caution dictate the final day’s play?
