River erosion is the gradual loss of riverbank land caused by shifting channels, strong currents, floods, sediment movement and other changes in river morphology. In Bangladesh, riverbank erosion affects homes, farmland, infrastructure and livelihoods, particularly along major river systems such as the Jamuna, Ganges-Padma and Meghna.
