Chinese tennis hopeful Xiqiao, he has secured his place in the group stage of the 31st International (Under-18) Junior Tennis Championship after a strong pre-qualifying win in Bangladesh on Sunday.
Playing on Court 2 at the Rajshahi Tennis Complex, Xiqiao showed his racket skills to defeat his opponent Arif Hossain in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. The opening victory guarantees his spot in the main draw of the tournament, which officially begins on Monday.
The junior competition will run from 5 to 10 October in Rajshahi. More than a hundred players from 10 different countries, including host nation Bangladesh, are taking part in the event.
This marks the first time Xiqiao has competed in an international tournament outside of his home country.
"It is certainly a joy for me," the young player said following his Sunday victory. "Playing abroad for the first time, I was feeling a bit of pressure. But when I stepped onto the familiar tennis court, everything felt easy."
Reflecting on his arrival in Bangladesh, the teenager admitted he is still adjusting to the local climate in Rajshahi.
"It is a different feeling on foreign soil. It is a bit hot here, and I am trying to adapt," he said. "The dream is definitely to win the title, but I know that path will not be easy. Many good players from various countries are playing in this tournament."
Reflecting on his opening match, Xiqiao was respectful of his opponent while explaining his winning strategy. "Arif played well, but I just took advantage of his mistakes to get ahead," he added.
