Repentance (Tawbah) and Istighfar are among the most important acts of worship in a believer’s life. However careful a person may be, they may unknowingly or knowingly commit various mistakes, shortcomings and sins.
To turn back from these, Allah the Almighty has kept the door of repentance open for His servants.
Istighfar purifies a believer’s heart and deepens their relationship with Allah. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) himself regularly sought forgiveness from Allah. Therefore, a believer should seek Allah’s forgiveness at every stage of life and sincerely turn back to Him through Istighfar.
One form of Istighfar mentioned in a hadith is:
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيَّ الْقَيُّومَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
Meaning: “I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Most Great, besides whom there is no true deity. He is the Ever-Living, the Sustainer and Preserver of all things. And I repent to Him.” (Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3577)
