سبحان الله وبحمده سبحان الله العظيم
Meaning: “Glory be to Allah and all praise belongs to Him. Glory be to Allah, the One of the highest greatness.”
Significance
The supplication means: “I declare the purity and glory of Allah while praising Him.”
This supplication expresses two fundamental things:
First, by saying ‘Subhan Allah’, one acknowledges Allah’s purity and His freedom from all kinds of imperfection.
Second, ‘wa bihamdihi’ expresses gratitude and praise for Him.
The hadith mentions special virtues of this dhikr.
The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever says ‘Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi’ 100 times every day, his sins will be forgiven, even if they are as much as the foam of the sea.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6405).
Another hadith states: “The words most beloved to Allah are ‘Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi’.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2137).
Another hadith states: “For whoever says ‘Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi’, a tree is planted for him in Paradise.” (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3464).
It is also narrated in a hadith that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever says ‘Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi’ three times every morning and evening will be protected from all kinds of harm.” (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3388).
