Sustenance (Rizq) is an essential part of human life. Wealth, food, clothing, shelter and good health are all forms of provision that people depend on every day.
While everyone hopes for a comfortable and blessed life, many face financial hardship, mounting debt or difficulties in making ends meet despite their best efforts. For a believer, such circumstances are a reminder to turn to Almighty Allah, the ultimate Provider, while continuing to make every lawful effort to improve one's circumstances.
The Holy Quran contains several supplications through which believers seek Allah's favour, blessings and the fulfilment of their needs. The prayers of the prophets and messengers teach believers to place their trust in Allah and seek His help in times of difficulty.
However, supplication should go hand in hand with action. Earning through lawful means, maintaining piety, seeking forgiveness and putting one's trust in Allah are also important aspects of a believer's life.
Here are some Quranic duas that believers may recite while seeking Allah's blessings and provision.
A prayer for good provision
رَبِّ اِنِّیۡ لِمَاۤ اَنۡزَلۡتَ اِلَیَّ مِنۡ خَیۡرٍ فَقِیۡرٌ
Meaning: “My Lord, I am truly in need of whatever good You may send down to me.” (Surah Al-Qasas, verse 24)
This supplication was made by Prophet Musa (Moses), expressing complete dependence on Allah and acknowledging his need for His blessings and provision.
A prayer for goodness in this world and the Hereafter
رَبَّنَاۤ اٰتِنَا فِی الدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَۃً وَّفِی الۡاٰخِرَۃِ حَسَنَۃً وَّقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Meaning: “Our Lord, grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 201)
This widely recited Quranic supplication seeks goodness in both worldly life and the Hereafter. It also reminds believers that true success encompasses both spiritual and worldly well-being.
A prayer for provision from Allah
Meaning: “Our Lord, send down to us a table spread with food from heaven to be a festival for us—for the first and the last of us—and a sign from You. Provide for us, for You are the best of providers.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, verse 114)
The supplication was made by Prophet Jesus (Jesus Christ) and his disciples, asking Allah to provide sustenance and make it a sign of His power and mercy.
Faith, effort and trust
The Quranic supplications for provision are not simply prayers for material wealth. They reflect a believer's dependence on Allah and recognition that all provision ultimately comes from Him.
At the same time, believers are expected to pursue lawful means of earning, remain patient during hardship and seek Allah's forgiveness and guidance. Thus, prayer and effort go hand in hand in seeking a life of lawful and blessed provision.
