Throughout human history, many great personalities have emerged. Some have excelled in knowledge, others in leadership, social reform or serving humanity.
However, the status, greatness and virtues of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are unique and unparalleled in every respect. He was not only a prophet and messenger but also a mercy to all creation, the final prophet, the greatest guide for humanity and the finest role model for people until the Day of Judgment.
His blessed life is a complete example of truth, justice, compassion, forgiveness, humanity and noble character. The Holy Quran and authentic Hadith contain numerous accounts of his virtues and distinctive attributes.
Here are 10 of his most notable virtues:
1. The Prophet was a mercy to all creation
One of the greatest virtues of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is that he was sent as a mercy to all creation. Allah says, “We have sent you only as a mercy to the worlds.” (Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 107)
His arrival led humanity from the darkness of ignorance, superstition, oppression and moral decline towards the light of faith, knowledge, justice and humanity. His teachings also emphasised compassion and wellbeing for animals, the environment and all creation.
2. The Prophet was the final prophet
One of the fundamental virtues of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is that he was the final prophet of Allah. The Holy Quran describes him as Khatam an-Nabiyyin, meaning the Seal of the Prophets. (Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 40)
The Prophet (PBUH) himself declared that prophethood came to an end with him. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 523)
Therefore, the finality of prophethood is one of the fundamental beliefs of Islam. No new prophet will come after him.
3. The Prophet was sent to all humanity
Many earlier prophets were sent to particular nations or communities. But the mission of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was not limited to any particular nation, region or period. He was sent for all humanity.
Allah says, “O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all.” (Surah Al-A'raf, verse 158)
The Prophet (PBUH) said that earlier prophets were sent to their respective communities, while he was sent to all people. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 335; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 521)
Therefore, his teachings transcend boundaries of country, nationality, language and race and apply to all humanity.
4. He was granted concise and comprehensive speech
A distinctive virtue of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was that he was granted the ability to deliver concise statements carrying profound and comprehensive meanings. This is known in Hadith terminology as Jawami al-Kalim.
He said that he had been given concise speech with comprehensive meanings. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 335; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 523)
His few words often contain profound lessons on life, morality, spirituality and social conduct. His sayings continue to guide people in their personal, family and social lives.
5. He was granted the right of the greatest intercession
On the Day of Judgment, when people will face extreme distress and anxiety, they will seek someone to intercede on their behalf. At that time of great hardship, the special intercession of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) will be manifested.
In authentic Hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) said that he was granted the special status of intercession. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 335; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 521)
This is one of the clearest signs of his special status and honour bestowed upon him by Allah.
6. He was supported by striking fear into the hearts of his enemies
Allah specially supported Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He said that he was aided by striking fear into the hearts of his enemies from a distance of one month’s journey. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 335; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 521)
This was a special form of divine support for the Prophet (PBUH). Allah’s support in establishing his mission and the truth of Islam is clearly reflected throughout history.
7. The earth was made a place of prayer and purification for his followers
A special privilege granted to the followers of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is that the entire earth was made suitable for prayer and a means of purification was provided.
The Prophet (PBUH) said that the earth had been made a place of prayer and purification for him. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 335; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 521)
This demonstrates the universality and ease of worship in Islam.
8. Spoils of war were made lawful for him
Another distinctive virtue of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was that spoils of war were made lawful for him. He mentioned this while describing the special privileges granted to him compared with earlier prophets. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 335; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 521)
This was among the distinctive features of his Shariah compared with the laws given to earlier prophets.
9. He possessed the finest character
One of the most remarkable aspects of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) greatness was his unparalleled character. Allah praised his character, saying, “Indeed, you are of a great moral character.” (Surah Al-Qalam, verse 4)
When Aisha (RA) was asked about his character, she said, “His character was the Quran.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 746)
In other words, the teachings of the Quran were not merely words or theories in his life. They were reflected in his speech, actions, conduct, forgiveness, compassion, patience and humanity.
10. He was immensely compassionate and concerned for his followers
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was extremely compassionate and caring towards his followers. Allah says, “Whatever causes you hardship is distressing to him. He is deeply concerned for your wellbeing and is gracious and merciful to the believers.” (Surah At-Tawbah, verse 128)
His concern for the faith, guidance and salvation of his followers was unparalleled. He placed their wellbeing above his own comfort and interests. His entire life was devoted to the liberation and welfare of humanity.
The virtues and honour of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cannot be confined to any particular number. He is the beloved of Allah, the final prophet, the messenger to all humanity and a mercy to all creation.
His life is a beacon of light for humanity, and his Sunnah is the path to salvation. Our duty is not merely to claim love for the Prophet (PBUH), but to put his teachings into practice in our personal, family and social lives. True love for the Prophet begins in the heart and leads a person towards following his Sunnah.
