Jagannath University (JnU) administration on Wednesday
instructed everyone to refrain from slaughtering any kind of animal on the
campus to ensure public health, cleanliness and a hygienic environment.
University Proctor (additional charge) Prof Dr Md Azam Khan
issued the directive in a notice requesting all teachers, students, officers
and employees of the university to comply with it.
The notice stated that action would be taken against anyone
violating the directive in accordance with a public notice issued by Dhaka
South City Corporation (DSCC), referring to the DSCC memorandum number
DSCC/PRD/79/2026-2027.
Earlier on Monday, students of the Department of Islamic
History and Culture organised a beef khichuri dinner in front of the
university’s Mukto Mancha.
During the event, Hindu students alleged that beef had been
cooked for the feast using unused bricks kept beside a temple located adjacent
to the Mukto Mancha.
However, the organisers from the Department of Islamic
History and Culture said they had moved the cooking arrangements farther away
after Hindu students raised objections, as the Mukto Mancha is adjacent to the
temple.
They also said they had not been informed at the time that
the bricks used for cooking belonged to the temple. They alleged that an
unintended incident was being portrayed differently, noting that these kind of
events are routinely organised in that part of the campus.
The incident sparked discussions and criticism among university students on social media, amid which, the JnU administration issued the notice banning the slaughter of any kind of animal on the campus.
