Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Dhaka University unit on Saturday conducted a day-long cleanliness and mosquito-control drive on the Dhaka University campus, with support from Dhaka South City Corporation and the university administration.

The campaign began at 9 am at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) as part of Chhatra Dal’s previously announced programme. Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Abdus Salam attended the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest, while Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam inaugurated the campaign.

After the inauguration, university officials, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists, and sanitation workers joined a rally from the TSC to the area in front of Kala Bhavan. They later inaugurated newly installed dustbins and began cleaning different parts of the campus. Mosquito-control activities were also carried out as part of the campaign.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Abdus Salam said Dhaka University had always played a leading role in the history of Bangladesh and that its teachers and students should continue to play a leadership role in bringing positive change to the country.

Referring to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s ‘Clean City, Green City’ vision, he said 200 dustbins had been provided for the university campus and that more would be supplied if necessary.

He, however, stressed that installing dustbins alone would not ensure cleanliness. "Students should ensure that they do not throw rubbish on the streets, in front of the TSC or elsewhere on the campus," he said.

Abdus Salam also emphasised controlling floating hawkers around the TSC, Shahbagh and Central Shaheed Minar areas to maintain cleanliness. He urged the university administration to prepare a list of hawkers and bring them under an identification system.

‘Shaheed Minar is a place of our heritage and pride. We do not want this place to remain unclean in any way,’ he said.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam urged students to develop the sense of responsibility for cleanliness. Declaring the campaign open, he said, ‘Cleanliness is a part of faith.’

Cleanliness could not be ensured by others alone, he said, adding that everyone needed to develop awareness from within and take responsibility for keeping the campus clean.

The vice-chancellor said, 'The campaign should not remain limited to a single day and that cleanliness activities should continue throughout the year. After any event at the university, we must ensure that not a single piece of polythene, tissue or nut shell is left behind,’ he said.

DU Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Abdus Salam, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, Proctor Israfil Pramanik Ratan, Chhatra Dal DU unit President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas, General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, Vice-President Anisur Rahman Khandaker Anik, Senior Joint General Secretary Md Nasir Uddin Shaon, Joint General Secretary Md Shamim Akhter Shuvo and Organising Secretary Md Nur Alam Bhuiyan Emon, among others, attended the programme.

University and hall-level leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal also took part in the campaign.
