Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament Barrister Kayser Kamal has urged young people to cultivate open-mindedness while developing logical and information-based thinking, saying they have a crucial role to play in building a democratic Bangladesh and an inclusive society.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the award ceremony of the 5th Haji Muhammad Muhsin Memorial National Inter-Club Debate Competition at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium of Dhaka University on Monday.
Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall Debating Club organised the event.
“Youth are the future of the country,” the Deputy Speaker said. “We must instil in them the qualities of logic, tolerance and responsible leadership. The youth should develop rational and information-based thinking through the practice of open-mindedness.”
He said debating teaches people to express their views with reason and listen to others’ opinions. He called for extending this practice beyond educational institutions to all levels of the state, including the National Parliament, to promote mutual tolerance and strengthen the democratic environment.
Barrister Kayser Kamal also stressed the need for national unity across party lines, urging all to resolve differences through logic and discussion so that the youth can lead the country towards a rational and democratic future.
Speaking as the main discussant, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam encouraged students to engage in co-curricular activities alongside their studies.
He said debating enhances creative thinking, builds self-confidence and helps shape students into honest, patriotic and responsible citizens.
“Achieving good results should not be the only goal of students,” he said, adding that students should learn to express their own opinions logically while also developing the mindset to accept differing views.
President of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall Debating Club Md Mujahidul Islam presided over the programme, while Editor and Publisher of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam attended as the guest of honour.
Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall Provost Shah Shamim Ahmed, Dhaka University Debating Society President Md Sajid Hasan and General Secretary Miftahul Jannat Rifat, among others, also addressed the gathering.
Freedom Fighter Ziaur Rahman Hall Debating Club won the championship title, while Amar Ekushey Hall Debating Club became the runner-up.
A total of 72 debaters representing 24 debate teams from across the country participated in this year’s tournament.
