The Dhaka University administration has assured full support for several environmental initiatives proposed by the university branch of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal to build a clean, green and eco-friendly campus.
The administration announced its backing following Chhatra
Dal’s proposals on waste management, mosquito eradication, greening, dengue
awareness and the removal of unauthorized structures during a view-sharing
meeting at the Prof Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom on Thursday.
Speaking at the meeting, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education)
Prof Abdus Salam, who is currently discharging the routine duties of the Vice
Chancellor, welcomed the student organization's initiative.
"The administration will provide necessary support to
make Dhaka University a 'Clean and Green Campus'," Prof Salam said, adding
that university authorities will also join a day-long cleanliness drive organized
by Chhatra Dal on 3 October.
During the meeting, Chhatra Dal leaders proposed closer
coordination with the Dhaka South City Corporation to streamline waste
management. They informed administrators that the city corporation has agreed
to supply 200 dustbins for the campus, which Chhatra Dal plans to install
subject to official approval.
Addressing the installation of dustbins, Prof Salam noted that relevant departments will select suitable locations and manage upkeep following existing university regulations. He stressed the importance of sustainable waste management in partnership with the local city corporation.
"Although the environmental and greening condition of
Dhaka University is relatively good, there is scope to improve solid waste
management," Prof Salam said, emphasizing that students must also play a
responsible role alongside the administration.
Regarding Chhatra Dal's proposals on mosquito control and
dengue prevention, Prof Salam confirmed that he has already instructed
concerned departments to take immediate action, including vector control
measures in residential areas. He also assured that administration will take
action to manage campus traffic congestion and clear unauthorized roadside
shops.
Chhatra Dal leaders expressed their willingness to make
campus cleanliness a year-round, sustainable programme rather than a one-off
event, offering student volunteers to assist the university administration.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Mohammad
Almojaddade Alfasane emphasized the necessity of following official guidelines
regarding any new construction or monuments on campus.
"The university's existing policies and prescribed
procedures must be followed in the construction of any facility or installation
of monuments at Dhaka University," Prof Alfasane said, noting that
unapproved structures will undergo review according to regulations.
Treasurer Prof M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Acting Registrar
Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed Liton, and Chhatra Dal DU branch leaders including
President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon
attended the meeting.
