The Dhaka University (DU) branch of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam on Sunday, demanding immediate and regular cleanliness drives to prevent the spread of dengue on campus.

The student organisation urged the university administration to install and maintain dustbins every 150 to 200 metres across the campus and conduct dengue prevention and cleaning operations at least twice a month in every residential hall and academic building.

Following the submission, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists distributed awareness leaflets to students from the Vice-Chancellor's office to the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).

University officials, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof  Mohammad Almujddade Alfasane, Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed, and Estate Manager Fatema Binte Mustafa, were present during submission of the memorandum.

The initiative aligns with a nationwide three-month "Dengue Prevention and Cleanliness Campaign-2026" launched by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. In the memorandum, Chhatra Dal highlighted the need to identify stagnant water and clear garbage dumping sites that serve as mosquito breeding grounds.

The leaders also referenced an earlier memorandum submitted on 4 August, reiterating that long-term environmental cleanliness requires continuous efforts rather than seasonal drives.

During a brief press conference outside the Vice-Chancellor's office, DU Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon stressed the necessity of joint action.

"We have come to the Vice-Chancellor and the responsible officials of the Dhaka University administration demanding regular effective campaigns on dengue prevention and environmental cleanliness. In order to get results in this regard, we have also urged them to implement the specific demands mentioned in the memorandum we submitted to the Vice-Chancellor on August 4, such as installing dustbins and ensuring regular cleaning drives," he said.

DU Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas assured the administration of full voluntary support from their activists to execute these health measures. "In addition to implementing various programs focused on dengue prevention and cleanliness campaigns from our organizational scope, if the university administration takes up any program with students on a large scale, we will also provide overall cooperation to the university administration and hall administrations on a voluntary basis if necessary," Sahas stated.

He added that hall-level leaders would submit similar memorandums to their respective hall provosts and distribute leaflets to residential students starting Monday.
