A four-day Law Fest 2026 began at the Department of Law of State University of Bangladesh (SUB) on Saturday, featuring a range of academic, co-curricular and cultural activities.

Being held under the theme “Think Law; Live Justice,” the festival will continue until September 8.

Prof Dr Asif Nazrul, adviser to the Department of Law, formally inaugurated the festival on 5 September. Professor Dr Md Hasan Kawsar, acting vice-chancellor of SUB, attended the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest.

The event was presided over by Jinat Amin Shipa, chairman of the Department of Law.

The university’s registrar, faculty members, students and distinguished guests were also present at the ceremony.

In his address, Asif Nazrul said law is not confined to textbooks and courtrooms, but that legal knowledge and awareness are essential for building a just and conscious society.

He stressed the importance of giving students opportunities to understand the practical application of law, the values of justice and their responsibilities as citizens alongside academic learning.

He expressed hope that the festival would help develop students’ leadership, critical thinking, ethical values and sense of social responsibility while encouraging them to engage with the broader aspects of legal practice.

As the chief guest, Md Hasan Kawsar said a university is not merely a place for acquiring knowledge but also an institution for nurturing responsible and just citizens.

He said law students would have opportunities to take leadership roles in the judiciary, administration, corporate sector and other professional fields in the future.

He emphasised the need to develop a balance of legal knowledge, a sense of justice, critical thinking and human values among students.

He also said the theme “Think Law; Live Justice” conveys an important message about connecting academic learning with the practice of law and justice in everyday life.

In her presidential remarks, Jinat Amin Shipa said the Law Fest was organised to make classroom learning more engaging, practical and meaningful for students.

She said the festival’s activities would help students develop intellectual abilities, creativity, reasoning, leadership and teamwork skills while deepening their understanding of law and justice.

She thanked faculty members, students and others involved in organising the festival.

The festival features a range of activities, including friendly debates, a picnic, sports, a wall magazine, an exhibition, quiz competition, moot court, cultural programme and an award-giving ceremony.

The activities are designed to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their academic and professional skills while promoting creativity, leadership, teamwork and active participation in co-curricular activities.

As part of the festival, a special awareness session titled “Cyber Law Awareness: Citizen Rights, Response and Digital Safety” will be held on September 7 for students from nearby colleges.

The session will cover cyber law, citizens’ rights, responsible online behaviour, cybersecurity and digital safety. A quiz competition will also be held to enhance participants’ knowledge and awareness of cyber law and digital safety.

The festival will conclude on 8 September with a cultural programme followed by an award-giving ceremony.

The Department of Law hopes the festival will provide an effective platform for enhancing students’ academic knowledge and fostering greater awareness of law, justice, citizens’ rights and social responsibility.
