Dhaka University has commemorated the 50th death anniversary of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam through a series of programmes, including wreath-laying at his tomb, recitation of Fateha, a discussion meeting, and performances of Nazrul songs.

On Thursday morning, teachers, students, officers, and employees led by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof ABM Obaidul Islam, placed wreaths at the tomb of the national poet adjacent to the Dhaka University Central Mosque; Surah Fateha was subsequently recited at the site.

A discussion meeting was later held on the open stage within the tomb premises under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam. The meeting was addressed by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Abdus Salam and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Mohammad Almojaddede Alfesanee as special guests. Director of the Nazrul Research Centre Prof Tariq Manjur delivered the memorial speech, while the programme was moderated by Prof Sirajul Islam Salekin, chairman of the Department of Bengali.

Paying deep respect to the memory of the national poet, Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam said, “The life and literary works of Kazi Nazrul Islam teach people to protest against injustice. The poet’s works inspire society to speak out against discrimination, oppression, and tyranny.”

Prof Obaidul Islam further highlighted that Nazrul’s literary contributions urge people to maintain strong unity grounded in equality, harmony, and peace. He called upon everyone to draw inspiration from the multi-dimensional poet’s life by upholding patriotism, compassion, and moral and human values.

The event was attended by the university proctor, hall provosts, acting registrar, as well as faculty members, students, and staff. The national poet’s granddaughter, Khilkhil Kazi, was also present.

Following the discussion, teachers and students from the university’s Department of Music performed selections of Nazrul songs. Earlier in the morning, a special Quran Discussion was held at the Dhaka University central mosque, following the Fajr prayers, marking the day.
