The Dhaka University (DU) unit of Chhatra Dal on Tuesday submitted a six-point memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam, demanding cleanliness and environmental protection across the campus.

The student organisation arranged the memorandum submission programme under the slogans "Green and Clean Campus First" and "Let us practice cleanliness, let us build a vibrant campus" at the office of the VC.

In the memorandum, JCD highlighted key demands including the installation of adequate dustbins, waste separation, cleanliness at campus shops, regular clean-up drives, improved sanitation, central monitoring for canteens, and the planting and preservation of trees.

Highlighting the importance of environmental balance alongside educational standards, JCD leaders stressed that both the administration and students must actively participate to foster cleanliness habits.

According to the memorandum, the university administration must install at least one dustbin within every 150 to 200-metre radius, set up colour-coded bins for degradable and non-degradable waste, and maintain them regularly.

The student leaders urged the authority to enforce mandatory monitoring to ensure dustbins in front of all campus shops and promote paper or eco-friendly alternatives to plastic cups and bags through effective campaigns.

JCD proposed conducting cleanliness drives at least twice a month in every residential hall and academic building with student participation, alongside regular maintenance by the university administration. They also demanded the renovation, development, and regular maintenance of toilets and washrooms across academic and residential facilities.

Besides, the organisation called for bringing all hall and academic canteens and cafeterias under a central monitoring system.

They suggested publishing a quarterly white paper on food quality and environment based on scientific data to ensure necessary administrative action.

The memorandum also urged the authority to identify suitable spots for planting new trees while ensuring proper care and monitoring of old trees to preserve the natural beauty of the campus.

DU unit JCD President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos, General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, and other campus leaders attended the programme.
