Marking World Environment Day 2026, the Department of Geography and Environment at Jagannath University (JnU) organised a rally, a tree plantation programme, and a seminar titled “Climate Change: Today's Actions, Tomorrow's Security” on Tuesday.
The event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of
Jagannath University Prof Dr Md Rais Uddin, as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, he emphasised the
importance of raising awareness to tackle environmental and climate challenges,
stating that changes in human attitudes and behavior are essential for
addressing the climate crisis.
He noted that environmental education should begin
within families and stressed the need to cultivate environmentally friendly
habits among younger generations from an early age.
The vice-chancellor highlighted that various human
activities have placed trees, hills, mountains, and biodiversity under
increasing threat.
He called upon everyone to play a responsible role
in maintaining ecological balance and urged people to refrain from activities
that harm the environment.
According to him, the adverse impacts of climate
change can be mitigated through tree plantation, maintaining cleanliness, and
practicing environmentally responsible behavior.
Prof Rais further stated that despite the limited
space and concrete-based infrastructure of the Jagannath University campus,
efforts have been intensified to promote tree plantation and cleanliness
initiatives.
He expressed hope that the teachers and students of
the Department of Geography and Environment would continue to play a leading
role in these efforts.
The keynote paper at the seminar was presented by
Prof Dr Md Manzurul Hasan of the Department of Geography and Environment at
Jahangirnagar University (JU).
In his presentation, he discussed the global and
local impacts of climate change, environmental risks, and various aspects of
sustainable development.
The keynote paper was subsequently discussed by Prof
Dr Mallik Akram Hossain of the Department of Geography and Environment at JnU.
Among the special guests were University Treasurer
Prof Dr Sabina Sharmin and Dean of the Faculty of Life and Earth Sciences Prof
