Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) celebrated World Veterinary Day 2026 amid enthusiasm and vibrant participation through rallies, discussions, exhibitions, and free veterinary care services.
Organised by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science with support from Army pharma, Century, Navana pharma, Gentry pharma, Incepta, Chemist, Abon Pharma, and Breeze Bio-science BD, the celebration highlighted this year’s theme, “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health,” underscoring the vital role of veterinarians in animal welfare, public health, food security, and research.
The day began with a colourful rally joined by teachers, students, officers, and staff, followed by a discussion session chaired by Dean Prof Md Taimur Islam.
GAU Treasurer Prof Md Safiul Islam Afrad, attending as the chief guest, emphasised strengthening veterinary education, research and technological capacity, while reaffirming the university’s commitment to elevating its Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and laboratories to international standards.
Prof Mohammad Sharif Raihan, director of Student Welfare, and Prof Anup Kumar Talukder, director of VTH, were present as special guests.
The programme began with a welcome address by Prof Ziban Chandra Das, associate director of VTH.
As part of the second phase of the celebration, the chief guest inaugurated a free veterinary treatment and vaccination campaign, through which farmers and livestock owners from different parts of Gazipur received direct services.
Throughout the day, GAU veterinary faculty members and students jointly treated over 300 animals and birds, reflecting the university’s commitment to community-based veterinary service.
Guests also visited poster exhibitions on sustainable veterinary practices, disease prevention, and veterinary innovation, alongside student-led stalls showcasing innovative feed and animal health products.
Observed globally since 2000, World Veterinary Day is celebrated annually on the last Saturday of April to recognise the invaluable contributions of veterinarians worldwide.
