The authorities of Rajshahi University (RU) have temporarily suspended the residential status of three students, including an assistant general secretary (AGS) of the hall sangsad, over a late-night “mob search” at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall based on allegations of a “female presence.” The hall vice-president (VP) has also been served a show-cause notice in connection with the incident.
The matter was confirmed through a notice signed by Hall Provost Prof Mahbubar Rahman on Sunday.
The punished students are hall sangsad’s AGS Md Israfil, Cultural Secretary Md Sakib Jubayer, and another residential student Md Forkan Hafez Jim. All three are reportedly active in the politics of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s university unit.
According to hall sources, a group led by AGS Israfil conducted a “forced search” at Room 121 of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall around 4:00am on Saturday, suspecting the presence of a female. However, they found no one in the room and left the place.
Following the incident, a meeting was held at the provost’s office in the evening. During the meeting, a heated argument reportedly took place between hall parliament leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
As several individuals, including the AGS, were absent, the meeting was initially suspended and later resumed at 11:00pm. The university proctor, Prof Mahbubur Rahman, was also present alongside the hall provost.
After several hours of discussion, the hall administration decided to temporarily suspend the residential status of the three students.
According to the notice, the allegation of a female entering Room 121 around 5:00am was found to be “primarily false and baseless.” It also mentioned that Hall VP Mozammel Haque has been asked to explain his role through a show-cause notice.
The notice further added that an investigation committee has been formed for a detailed probe into the matter. A specific deadline for submitting the investigation report will be mentioned in the official order.
