Bangladesh’s dreams of reaching the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2027 in China were shattered on Sunday after a late collapse saw them suffer a 3-0 defeat against the Philippines in their decisive Group H qualifier in Tashkent.
Heading into the tie, both teams were level on three points following their opening victories over hosts Uzbekistan. However, because the Philippines won their first match 4-0 compared to Bangladesh's 2-1 victory, the Southeast Asians only needed a draw to advance. The result sends the Philippines to their third consecutive finals in China as group winners, while Bangladesh are eliminated.
The Philippines used their physical and technical advantages to dominate the early exchanges, forcing Bangladesh to defend deep in their own half.
Goalkeeper Meghla Rani Roy kept her side in the game, producing excellent saves to deny Aryanna Capsa and Ariana Enderes. In the 24th minute, Savannah Chheng slid Noelle Granger through on goal, but Munia Akter tracked back brilliantly to force the forward into a tight angle, allowing Roy to gather the ball safely.
Bangladesh weathered the storm and began to find their rhythm late in the first half. Mousumi Akter headed narrowly wide before forward Alpi Akter rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike from outside the box.
The South Asians carried that momentum into the second half. In the 58th minute, Alpi nearly latched onto Tithi Mahato’s long pass, but Philippines goalkeeper Abigail Garcia rushed off her line to clear the danger. Shortly after, a teasing cross from Fatema Akter found Purnima Marma, who fired her effort into the side netting, before Garcia safely collected a shot from Umma Kulsum.
Failing to convert their chances eventually cost Bangladesh. The stubborn resistance was finally broken in the 73rd minute when defender Airin Khatun miskicked a cross from Enderes, allowing Maya Bascara to smash the rebound into the net.
Roy produced a heroic double save in the 83rd minute, denying Granger from point-blank range and instantly blocking the rebound from Enderes. However, as Bangladesh pushed desperately for an equaliser, the Philippines killed the game off.
Right on the 90-minute mark, Ariana Gementiza picked out Granger's run into the box, and the forward slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Granger then added her second goal deep into stoppage time to seal the 3-0 victory and end Bangladesh's qualifying campaign.
