Bangladesh chief selector Habibul Bashar Sumon believes the National Cricket League (NCL) remains crucial for identifying Bangladesh’s next generation of players, saying watching matches from the ground gives selectors a far clearer picture than television or YouTube.

The former cricketer has been regularly travelling to different venues since the start of the NCL, insisting he intends to watch matches across all levels, including the second-tier and Third Division competitions.

“I enjoy watching cricket. I try to watch the game very closely,” Bashar told on Monday. “You cannot see everything on YouTube or television. You may see a bowler bowling or a batsman batting, but at the ground you can see everything.”

The former Tigers skipper mentioned selectors assess more than just a player’s technical ability. Attitude, body language and positivity throughout a match are also important factors in judging a cricketer.

“The NCL is very important for us. We already know most of the established players, but it is very important to see how the new ones are doing,” he said.

Bashar also highlighted Mymensingh batter Mahfijul Islam Robin, who has been among the consistent performers after impressing in South Africa and scoring consecutive half-centuries in the NCL.

However, the 54-year-old cautioned against rushing to conclusions about the youngster.

“It is a little early to make any comment about him, but he has that prospect. He is in good form and scoring runs,” Bashar said.

With Bangladesh looking to strengthen their opening options, Bashar hopes the NCL and the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) will produce players for the national team.

He further explained Robin should not be restricted to one format.

“Robin needs to play all formats. He has the ability to do well in all formats,” Bashar said, stressing that red-ball cricket can further develop a player’s skills for white-ball cricket as well.
