The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed South African coach Malibongwe Maketa as the assistant coach of the national men’s cricket team, with his two-year contract running from October 2026 to November 2028.
The 46-year-old will join the national coaching setup in the UAE and brings more than two decades of coaching experience across domestic, international and high-performance cricket in South Africa.
Maketa, a Cricket South Africa (CSA) Level 4-qualified coach, previously served as assistant coach of the South African national team, head coach of South Africa A and South Africa U-19, and head coach of the National Academy and Warriors franchise.
He was part of South Africa’s coaching staff at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and worked during Test series victories over Australia and India, as well as series wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan between 2017 and 2019.
Maketa has also played a significant role in developing emerging players. He guided South Africa Emerging to the CSA One-Day Cup Division 2 title in 2023-24 and previously led South Africa U-19 to the ICC U-19 World Cup semi-finals.
“I am pleased to accept the position of Assistant Coach with the Bangladesh National Team,” Maketa said. “We have a young and exciting team, and I am looking forward to working alongside Phil and the rest of the coaching staff to help bring out the best in the players.”
Maketa most recently served as head coach of South Africa U-19 and the National Academy, alongside previous assignments with South Africa A.
