Bangladesh national football team crashed out of the tournament on Monday after a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Singapore, once again paying the price for toothless finishing despite dominating possession and territory.
Following an opening 3-0 defeat against Malaysia, the result sealed an early exit for the men in red and green, turning their final group fixture against hosts Indonesia into a dead rubber.
Head coach Thomas Dooley rang the changes, bringing Jamal Bhuyan, Zidane Yousuf, Shuki Itofusa, and Sheikh Morsalin into a positive 4-4-2 setup. Bangladesh dictated the tempo from the opening whistle and tried to build patiently from the back, but repeatedly ran out of ideas around the penalty box. They failed to muster a single shot on target before the break.
Singapore, by contrast, made their rare chances count. Bangladesh goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon pulled off sharp saves to deny Ilhan Fandi and Jacob William, but he was left helpless in the 35th minute when an unmarked Harhys Stewart powered home a header from Nur Adam Abdullah’s cross. Fandi nearly doubled the lead two minutes later when his effort rattled the crossbar.
"Tonight we saw a completely different side from the last match, and I am very happy with how the boys reacted," Dooley said at the final whistle. "We played genuine football and took the fight to them. But our biggest problem is scoring. We simply do not have a natural striker who can bury the ball in the net."
Dooley also brushed aside online rumours that his men had neglected set-piece training.
"We worked on them during our camp in Bangladesh, even though bad weather disrupted a few sessions," he said. "Don't believe everything you read on Facebook."
The loss means Bangladesh’s campaign is now effectively reduced to their final Group A fixture against hosts Indonesia on Thursday at 6:30pm Bangladesh time, with a place in the final no longer within their reach.
