The Bangladesh under-20 women’s hockey team kept their World Cup dreams alive with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Malaysia to secure fifth place at the Junior Asia Cup in Moqi, China.

After a goalless first half, captain Sharika Safa Rimon broke the deadlock in the third quarter with a clinical penalty stroke. Kona Akter doubled the advantage in the fourth quarter with a brilliant field goal. Breaking down a strong Malaysian defence, Bangladesh held firm even after Malaysia grabbed a late consolation strike.

The top four teams automatically qualify for the Under-20 Women’s World Cup. However, Bangladesh could still secure a spot if India is chosen as the host nation.

"Officials from the Asian Hockey Federation and other teams are saying we have a chance to play in the World Cup by finishing fifth," said head coach Zahid Hossain Raju. "We will be sure in a few days."

It is a historic period for Bangladesh women's hockey, with the senior team also preparing to play in the Asian Games for the first time. Raju praised his junior squad's fighting spirit throughout the tournament.

"We won all our matches in the Challenger group to become champions," Raju added. "We competed against Japan from the Elite group. If the girls had more practice matches, they could have managed a better result against them. After losing to Japan yesterday, they played brilliantly against Malaysia today."

Meanwhile, Giles Bonnet’s under-20 men’s team ended their campaign by beating Chinese Taipei 5-2 to claim seventh place in Inner Mongolia on Saturday.

Munna Islam opened the scoring from a penalty corner, but Chinese Taipei equalised late in the first quarter.

Mohammad Rifat restored the lead in the second quarter from a Sabbir Hossain Konok pass before Taipei levelled again. Tayeb Ali then scored from a penalty corner to make it 3-2. Rifat netted his second early in the final quarter, and MD Abdullah sealed the win with a field goal five minutes from time. Rifat was named Player of the Match for his standout performance.
