Following years of complications, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) officially secured 15.20 acres of land in Ramu, Cox's Bazar on Monday to build the country's first FIFA-funded technical centre. Although adverse weather caused fears that the handover event might be ruined, the conditions could not stand in the way of the ceremony.
BFF President Tabith Awal and Deputy Commissioner M A Mannan signed the deeds, ending a four-year process after a previous site was cancelled over environmental issues. The $6.6m (nearly Tk88cr) FIFA project will feature natural and artificial pitches, medical units, and dormitories.
"Following the Prime Minister's directive, the government handed over this plot for Bangladesh's first FIFA-certified technical centre," Tabith said. "Training will run for all age groups, boys and girls. We also aim to launch physical rehabilitation programmes here, even for paralysis patients."
Tabith expressed deep gratitude to local officials. "Deputy Commissioner Mannan has played the most responsible role. His name is now written in our football history," he said, also thanking the Police Superintendent, government staff, and the hotel authorities.
He heavily credited State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque for ensuring the quick handover, confirming the minister will attend the official opening.
Regarding construction, Tabith stated: "The land is permanently ours. We will start boundary and levelling work next month, then appoint a consultant for the design. We lost many players in the past due to infrastructure flaws. In the future, Bangladesh's best players will train in Ramu, with full support from coaches, physios, and doctors." He also shared his vision for integrating sports tourism in Cox's Bazar.
DC Mannan added: "This land was handed over at a symbolic price. I believe top players will emerge from here to lead Bangladesh football. This centre will truly fulfil the people's passion for the sport."
