Bangladesh will begin their ICC Women's T20 World Cup campaign against the Netherlands in Birmingham on Sunday, hoping to finally translate years of participation into meaningful progress on the global stage.
This year's tournament marks Bangladesh's seventh appearance in the competition since making their debut in 2014.
However, despite being regular participants, the Tigresses have managed only three victories in 25 World Cup matches, highlighting the challenge that still lies ahead for Nigar Sultana Joty's side.
Recent form has offered limited encouragement.
Bangladesh suffered defeats against Scotland and the Netherlands in a pre-tournament tri-nation series before losing warm-up matches to New Zealand and Ireland.
Yet Joty remains optimistic that her side can adapt quickly to the batting-friendly conditions in England.
"We'll be expecting a lot of runs because we watched yesterday's game (England's game) and batters been dominating all over the game. So, we're expecting that our batters will do the same for us," she stated.
The Bangladesh captain also dismissed suggestions that the Netherlands could be overwhelmed by the occasion despite making their World Cup debut.
"First of all, I would like to say that the opening game of a tournament is very important for both teams. I would not say that just because they are playing their first World Cup, they will be under more excitement or pressure. They may lack experience at this level, but they are very, very good in these conditions."
Bangladesh will also look towards young opener Juairiya Ferdous to provide momentum at the top of the order after impressive performances in the practice matches.
"The way she has played in the last two practice matches, I would say that she is currently in excellent form and rhythm. We hope she can continue to give us those positive starts. She is a very young player, but her intent is highly impactful for the team," said Joty.
