Defending champions Bangladesh stormed straight into the SAFF Women's Championship final in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, as substitute Sagorika Mosammat struck deep into stoppage time to seal a pulsating 2-1 semi-final victory over Nepal.

The breathless encounter at Goa's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was a perfect mirror of the 2024 tournament final, where Bangladesh also broke Nepalese hearts by the exact same 2-1 margin to lift the regional crown.

Head coach Peter James Butler made three bold tactical changes to his starting line-up, notably leaving experienced defender Sheuli Azim on the bench following the tragic passing of her mother the day prior.

However, Bangladesh began the match precariously.

A dominant Nepal side capitalised on the reigning champions' early nerves and defensive frailties, opening the scoring in the 22nd minute when Gita Rani executed a clever chipped finish inside a crowded penalty area.

Sensing the tie slipping away, Butler made a decisive double substitution in the 38th minute, introducing tournament veterans Shamsunnahar Junior and Tohura Khatun.

The tactical gamble paid immediate dividends.

Bangladesh suddenly found their attacking rhythm and equalised on the stroke of half-time through a moment of sheer brilliance from Ritu Porna Chakma.

The dynamic winger, who was deservedly named Player of the Match for her relentless all-around display, unleashed a spectacular, curling corner kick that evaded Nepal goalkeeper Anjila Subba and flew directly into the far post.

The second half devolved into a frantic, end-to-end affair.

Nepal rattled the woodwork early through Rekha Poudel, while Bangladesh squandered a glorious opportunity when Shamsunnahar Junior fired wide instead of squaring the ball to an unmarked Tohura.

Seeking a decisive blow, Butler introduced Sagorika in place of Anika Rania Siddiqui to inject fresh impetus into the frontline.

Sagorika initially saw a golden one-on-one opportunity brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Subba in the 79th minute, but the young forward made spectacular amends in the second minute of six added injury-time minutes.

Capitalising on a swift burst of pace and a perfectly weighted low cross from Shamsunnahar Junior, Sagorika coolly slotted home from close range to trigger ecstatic, unbridled celebrations on the Bangladesh bench.

Despite a frantic late push from Nepal's Nisha Thoka, Bangladesh resolutely held their nerve to successfully secure their passage straight into the final, keeping their dreams of a historic hat-trick of SAFF titles firmly alive.
