Bangladeshi International Master Mohammad Fahad Rahman has taken a monumental stride towards elite chess status, securing his second Grandmaster norm whilst clinching the championship title at the FUBY Academy Norm Chess Tournament Series 3 in Istanbul.
In a masterful display of tactical acumen, Fahad finished the round-robin event with a dominant seven points from nine games.
The prestigious tournament featured a formidable 10-player field, including three GMs and four International Masters from nations including Georgia, Hungary, Poland, Iran, and the host country Turkey.
Heading into Wednesday's crucial double-header, the stakes were incredibly high.
During the morning's eighth round, Fahad, playing with the black pieces, deployed the Sicilian Defence against the higher-rated Iranian IM Pour Agha Bala Amirreza.
In a gruelling and brilliant encounter, Fahad outmanoeuvred his opponent, securing a vital victory after 59 moves.
Knowing a draw in the final round would guarantee the coveted norm, Fahad approached the afternoon session with seasoned pragmatism.
Playing white against Georgian IM Gaioz Nigalidze, who also opted for the Sicilian Defence, the Bangladeshi carefully managed the board.
The players agreed to a draw after just 10 moves, officially sealing Fahad's tournament victory and his second GM norm.
This achievement builds upon his maiden GM norm, earned at the Hanoi Grandmasters in March 2024.
To officially claim the ultimate GM title, Fahad now requires one final nine-game norm and must elevate his FIDE rating to the requisite 2500 mark.
Fahad’s ascent, fully backed by the financial sponsorship of the Pakiza Group, arrives at a poignant moment for Bangladeshi chess.
Following the tragic passing of GM Ziaur Rahman at the board in 2024, only one of the nation’s five historic GMs remains actively competing.
Carrying the weight of domestic expectation and in scintillating form, Fahad remains firmly on course to become Bangladesh's sixth GM by the year's end.
