Bangladesh's preparations for the second Test against Pakistan in Sylhet have been dealt an early blow, with first-choice opener Shadman Islam officially ruled out after sustaining a chest injury during the Mirpur Test.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed on Thursday that Shadman suffered a traumatic chest contusion while taking a catch and will be unavailable for the fixture starting this Saturday.
"Shadman took a blow to the chest while taking a catch during the first Test. He has sustained a traumatic chest contusion and is in pain. He will not be available for the second Test unfortunately," national team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.
The uncertainty does not end there. Fellow opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy is also carrying a finger injury, leaving the top-order plans in doubt. Sources told Daily Sun that management will assess Joy's condition before finalising the XI.
"We needed to be ready with a back-up — that is why Zakir Hasan came in, as we didn't have much time to take chances," a source added.
Amidst this chaos, an exciting subplot has emerged: in-form white-ball opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim is set to make his long-awaited Test debut. While the inclusion of Zakir as a replacement raised eyebrows, a member of the selection panel clarified the hierarchy.
"Naturally, Tanzid Tamim will be ahead of Zakir to make his place in the playing XI, but our other opener is also having some concern, so we picked Zakir as his back-up," the selector confirmed.
The timing of these injuries is particularly frustrating as both Shadman and Joy had been in solid form heading into the series. Joy was the standout in the previous series against Ireland with 265 runs, while Shadman contributed 193. However, both struggled in Mirpur, failing to reach double figure in most innings.
Zakir, who has played 13 Tests, arrives in strong form after being the second-highest run-scorer in the National Cricket League with 628 runs. He has carried that momentum into the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, hitting a century for Dhaka Leopards. As Zakir practiced at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, Bangladesh faced the prospect of a completely reshuffled opening pair for Saturday's crucial clash.
