Bangladesh finished as runners-up in the South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship, securing a total of eight medals.

On the final day, hopes of adding more honours faded as Khoi Khoi Sai Marma, Nafiz Iqbal, Abul Hasem Hasib and Md Midul Rahman were all eliminated in the singles quarter-finals.

The team concluded the tournament with one gold, one silver and six bronze medals.

Host nation India dominated the competition, winning all events and claiming 13 gold and four silver medals to top the table.

Sri Lanka finished third with 14 medals, followed by Nepal with 10 and the Maldives with seven.

Bangladesh’s only silver came in the Under-19 boys’ doubles, where the Nafiz-Hasib pair showed promise but lost 1-3 to India’s Rajsekharan-Senthil duo in the final.

Hasib emerged as the standout performer for Bangladesh, winning three medals: gold in the team event, silver in doubles and bronze in mixed doubles.

Nafiz contributed two medals, including a team gold.

In the Under-15 category, Midul secured three bronze medals, while several others added to the tally across team, doubles and mixed doubles events.

However, Bangladesh failed to win any medals in singles across both age groups, highlighting a key weakness.

Of the 15-member squad, 14 players were current or former students of Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan.

Officials noted that while the boys met expectations, the girls lagged behind.

Despite this, the overall medal count marks Bangladesh’s best-ever performance at the South Asian junior level, with plans underway for long-term training to improve future results.
