Bangladesh’s AFC Asian Cup qualification campaign ended in frustration as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Singapore, despite producing one of their strongest performances in the group stage.

Although already eliminated from contention, the visitors approached the final qualifier with intent and energy, controlling large spells of the match and creating several clearcut chances.

However, a lack of clinical finishing proved costly, as Singapore made the most of their limited opportunity to secure all three points.

Despite the result, head coach Javier Cabrera expressed immense pride in his side’s performance, describing the defeat as difficult to accept given the way his team played.

“It is a very difficult result to digest because probably it’s the best performance we have had in the whole group. The team deserved at least a point, if not the win. I am very proud of the players, how we performed both on and off the ball. The way we played makes me very, very proud of the team,” he said.

Bangladesh dominated possession and dictated the tempo for much of the game, but were undone by a single moment of quality from Singapore. Cabrera insisted his side were the better team on the night.

“We have not been worse than any team in this group. In many matches, we have been better than our opponents, but we finish with five points that is the reality. There is no doubt that Bangladesh were superior,” he noted.

The Spanish coach also highlighted the team’s ongoing development, pointing to clear improvements in professionalism, game management and tactical awareness.

“We need to be positive. There are things changing. The quality on the pitch is improving, and we are becoming more professional. Players are learning how to manage the tempo, and we don’t get overexcited anymore. These are positive signs,” he stated.

However, Cabrera acknowledged that Bangladesh still lack the clinical edge required at this level, a factor that ultimately decided the contest.

“Teams like Singapore have the capacity to take one chance and score. That is something we are still missing. If we can improve in that area, I believe in the coming years Bangladesh can move 20 or 30 places up in the rankings,” he explained.

Despite the defeat, the performance offered encouragement for the future, with Bangladesh showing clear signs of progress throughout the qualification campaign. While results may not have reflected their efforts, the team leave the qualifiers with renewed belief and a foundation to build upon.
