The National Sports Council (NSC) on Wednesday formed a five-member independent probe committee to investigate allegations of widespread irregularities and manipulation, along with abuse of authority, in Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) election.

NSC announced the decision through an official notification issued on 11 March following a formal complaint submitted by divisional councillors and cricket organisers raising serious concerns over the conduct of the election.

Retired Supreme Court judge AKM Asaduzzaman has been appointed as the chairman of the five-member committee. The other members are Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Md Selim Fakir, Joint Commissioner (DB Admin & South) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mohammad Nasirul Islam, veteran sports journalist ATM Sayeeduzzaman and Supreme Court advocate Barrister Saleh Akram Samrat.

According to the order signed by NSC Executive Director (Joint Secretary) Md Doulotuzzaman Khan, the committee has been instructed to submit its investigation report to the State Minister for Youth and Sports within 15 working days.

As per the terms of reference outlined in the notification, the committee will collect necessary information, documents and evidence to verify the allegations raised regarding the BCB election. It will also take statements from relevant individuals and organisations involved in the process.

The probe body has been tasked with examining whether the councillor nomination process was carried out in accordance with the BCB constitution as well as the applicable laws and regulations. If required, the committee will be able to seek explanations from concerned clubs, organisations and individuals.

The committee has also been authorised to include any expert as a co-opted member if deemed necessary for the purpose of the investigation.

Officials said the committee will also put forward recommendations aimed at ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the BCB’s future election processes.

When contacted by Daily Sun, AKM Asaduzzaman said, “I haven't received the letter yet. Once I receive it, I will decide what to do and how to do it. I have only heard that I have been appointed.”

The move comes after a 20-page complaint was submitted alleging large-scale irregularities in the 2025 BCB election.

Earlier, a group of Dhaka-based clubs led by former national captain Tamim Iqbal had urged the NSC to investigate the election, claiming that 50 out of 76 clubs in the capital supported the call for a probe. Divisional councillors and former cricket organisers also raised concerns over alleged irregularities in councillor nominations, the formation of ad-hoc committees and the alleged misuse of authority by officials involved in the election process.

The findings of the committee are expected to play a key role in determining the next course of action regarding the disputed BCB election.
