Bangladesh Cricket Board coach Sohel Islam reaffirmed on Thursday that senior all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan remains an automatic choice for the national team.
Speaking to reporters, Sohel dismissed any suggestion that Shakib’s inclusion should come as a surprise.
“Why would I be surprised?” the veteran coach said.
“If the problems that are there aren’t present, then Shakib is an option for us, and he will play in the team. There’s nothing to be surprised about. There’s no question about his quality or his game.”
Meanwhile, the 55-year old coach also addressed concerns over the recent One Day International struggles of T20 skipper Litton Kumar Das, whose form has dipped in the 50-over format despite playing regularly in 20-over cricket.
Litton also endured a modest run in the Bangladesh Cricket League One-Day Version, missing the final match for North Zone due to a fever, raising questions about his readiness ahead of upcoming international assignments.
However, Sohel believes the experienced batter is putting in the work to regain form.
“If you think professionally, there is no option but to believe that you will perform well from here,” Sohel noted.
“Every player comes every day trying to give their best and contribute to the team. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t.”
The experienced coach revealed that Litton is already preparing intensely ahead of the national team’s upcoming training camp.
“I just saw him coming from the gym and practising. He’s preparing in his own way,” Sohel explained.
“He knows the national team practice starts tomorrow (Friday). Everyone is trying to prepare as best as possible to step onto the field ready.”
