BBL opener could break new ground in Chennai

Cricket Australia is exploring a bold plan to stage the opening match of next season’s Big Bash League in India, with Chennai emerging as a potential host city.

According to ESPNcricinfo, senior BBL executives Phil Rigby and Margot Harley recently toured India on a fact-finding mission.

The pair met officials from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and inspected Chepauk Stadium, home of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

The proposal faces major hurdles, including approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, broadcasters and clubs.

Scheduling strain, player recovery and Chennai’s December flood risk also loom large as Cricket Australia weighs a historic overseas leap for the Big Bash League.
