After defeating Rangpur Riders on Sunday, the player of the match, Najmul Hossain Shanto has made it clear in the post-match conference that he is not losing sleep over selection matters for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, insisting his focus remains firmly on improving his own game.
Rajshahi skipper Shanto was named Player of the Match after a match-winning 76 off 42 balls against Rangpur Riders, continuing his fine run of form in T20 cricket. Despite not being named in Bangladesh’s World Cup squad, the left-hander said he has given little thought to the issue.
“No, as far as I know, the World Cup team has already been announced. That’s what I know,” Shanto told the media.
“Honestly, I haven’t even thought about selection. My main focus is how I can make an impact every day. And I feel it’s still not enough — the way I have batted so far. There is still room for improvement,” he added. “If I get another opportunity in the next match, I will try again to make an impact for the team. Selection is not under my control. The coach, captain and selectors will do what they feel is best for the team.”
The left hander also played down concerns over form and consistency in the shorter format, particularly ahead of a major tournament like the World Cup.
“In T20 cricket, someone might go eight or ten innings without runs — that can happen,” he said. “One good innings can bring back confidence. So I believe the team management has kept faith in the players who aren’t scoring at the moment.”
The test captain stressed that Bangladesh’s recent success in bilateral series should ease concerns.
“They were in very good positions and won several series. That confidence will still be there. There’s no reason to worry too much,” Shanto concluded.
