The four-nation Begum Khaleda Zia IHF Nations Trophy kicked off in Dhaka on Sunday, with hosts Bangladesh making a flying start on the court as top officials pledged deeper support for women’s sports across South Asia.

Organised by the Bangladesh Handball Federation under the International Handball Federation, the tournament opened at the Shaheed Captain M. Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium. State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque officially inaugurated the event by releasing colourful balloons, followed by a lively 15-minute cultural dance performance.

Speaking as chief guest, Aminul underlined the broader value of hosting regional rivals India, Nepal, and the Maldives.

"Hosting an international sports event is a unique honour for Bangladesh," Aminul said. "Bringing together the senior women's teams reflects our commitment to regional harmony and brotherhood. These players symbolise strength, perseverance, and passion. We are deeply committed to empowering our youth and boosting women's participation in sports at every level. This will inspire the next generation of athletes."

Federation president Abu Mohammad Sarwar Farid dedicated the tournament to former prime minister Khaleda Zia, calling her an enduring inspiration for women's empowerment, equal rights, and leadership.

Action on the court began immediately with a single round-robin format. Hosts Bangladesh cruised past Nepal 33-20 after leading 13-9 at the break. Player of the match Alpana Akter led the charge under Spanish coach Ana Alonso with seven goals, while Misti Khatun and Shyamoli Ming struck six each. The win avenged Bangladesh's 2019 South Asian Games loss to Nepal.

In Sunday's second fixture, title favourites India dismantled the Maldives 40-8 in a completely one-sided encounter.

The league stage runs until 20 October, followed by the third-place playoff on 21 October and the final on 22 October. Bangladesh take on India next on Monday.
