Bangladesh’s total gas supply to the national grid rose to 2,425 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) on Saturday, as floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) supplied 810 mmcfd, while the domestic gas production and supply stood at 1,615 mmcfd.
According to Petrobangla’s 4pm data, this has been the highest liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply added to the national grid since the disruption at Excelerate Energy’s FSRU off Maheshkhali on 21 July.
Excelerate Energy’s FSRU supplied 300 mmcfd, while Summit’s FSRU supplied 510 mmcfd on the day, improving imported gas availability and helping ease widespread gas shortages and pressure on electricity generation.
Summit’s FSRU has a capacity of up to 500 mmcfd, while Excelerate Energy’s terminal can handle around 600 mmcfd, totaling 1,100. Petrobangla data show that national gas supply stood at 1,931.2 mmcf on 13-14 August against official demand of 3,854 mmcf, 2,039.2 mmcf on 12-13 August, 2,109.6 mmcf on 11-12 August and 2,199.1 mmcf on 10-11 August.
Power sector to get more gas
Meanwhile, Petrobangla is planning to allocate up to 960 mmcfd of gas to the power generation amid the ongoing load-shedding crises, depending on overall gas availability and system requirements.
Gas allocation to power plants has been around 860 mmcfd at different times. The additional allocation is intended to support power generation while authorities manage limited gas supplies among power plants, fertiliser factories, industries, and other consumers.
According to Petrobangla data, domestic sources currently account for around two-thirds of total gas supply, with LNG making up the remainder.
