Despite a decline in the number of buyers and sellers in the capital’s kitchen markets following Eid-ul-Adha, vegetable prices remain high due to limited supply.
However, prices of broiler and Sonali chickens have fallen by up to Tk10 per kg over the past week.
A visit to markets in Mirpur-6, Mirpur-10, Mirpur-13 and Shewrapara found most vegetables selling at last week’s elevated prices.
Traders said many wholesale markets and retail shops have yet to resume full operations after the Eid holidays, resulting in lower-than-normal supplies.
Consumers, however, alleged that some traders were charging excessive prices on the pretext of supply shortages.
Bitter gourd was selling at Tk60-80 per kg, okra at Tk40-50, pointed gourd at Tk60-80, taro root at Tk80-100, yardlong beans at Tk60-80 and snake gourd at Tk60 per kg.
Eggplant prices ranged from Tk60 to Tk120 per kg depending on quality, while taro stems sold for Tk80-100 per kg.
Tomatoes were priced at Tk80-100 per kg, radish at Tk70, cauliflower at Tk60-70 per piece, cabbage at Tk50 per piece and bottle gourd at Tk50-60 each.
Green chilli prices declined by around Tk40 per kg, selling between Tk60 and Tk100 per kg. Papaya was sold at Tk60 per kg, sweet pumpkin at Tk40, local cucumber at Tk100 and hybrid cucumber at Tk60 per kg. Lemon prices also eased, with four lemons selling for Tk8-20.
In the poultry market, Sonali chicken was sold at Tk320 per kg, Sonali hybrid chicken at Tk280 and broiler chicken at Tk150 per kg.
Among leafy vegetables, red spinach sold at Tk15 per bundle, bottle gourd leaves at Tk40, two bundles of water spinach at Tk20 and Malabar spinach at Tk30.
Among essential commodities, potatoes were selling at Tk25-30 per kg and local onions at Tk45-50 per kg.
