Hype and Hits: Eid films draw mixed audience reaction
A A

To bring back the audience to the cinema hall on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha festival, eight new films have been released in theatres. These movies with big budgets, star-studded casting and diverse stories have created a different kind of interest among movie lovers.

Among the releases, Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan-starrer “Rockstar” has emerged as one of the most-talked-about films of the season. Directed by Azman Russo, the romantic drama generated enormous hype long before its release. The film’s promotional campaign, including Shakib Khan’s stylish new look, elaborate costumes and visually appealing teaser animations, successfully attracted audience and built high expectations.

However, despite the expectation, “Rockstar” has faced criticism from viewers since its Eid release. While audience flocked to both single-screen theatres and multiplexes with great enthusiasm, many viewers expressed disappointment after watching the film. The movie features Sabila Nur, Tanzia Methila and Sunidhi Nayak alongside Shakib Khan.

Several moviegoers have taken to social media to voice their concerns. Critics argue that the storyline appears to borrow elements from multiple foreign films and progresses at a slow pace. Some audience also questioned the development of the central romance, saying important aspects of the relationship between the lead characters were not adequately portrayed. Others criticised the depiction of excessive drug use by the protagonist, claiming it negatively affected the overall narrative.

The film “Roid”, directed by Mejbaur Rahman Sumon, has quickly become a favourite among multiplex audience and cinephiles. The film marks Sumon’s return to the big screen four years after the massive success of “Hawa”, one of the most acclaimed Bangladeshi films in recent years.

Even before its release, “Roid” attracted attention through its compelling trailer, striking posters and memorable soundtrack. Since hitting theatres, discussions surrounding the film have intensified, particularly regarding the performance of actress Nazifa Tushi. Her portrayal of “Pagli,” the wife of the character Sadhu, has earned widespread praise from both critics and audience.

Many viewers have highlighted Tushi’s restrained acting style, expressive eye contact and convincing depiction of a rural woman. Social media users have described her performance as one of the film’s strongest aspects.

Beyond these two headline-grabbing releases, seven other films have added variety to this year’s Eid festival.

One of the most notable is “Bonolota Sen”, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Masud Hasan Ujjal. Starring Khairul Basar, Masuma Rahman Nabila and Sohel Mandal, the film has drawn considerable attention from audience seeking a more artistic cinematic experience. Inspired by the literary legacy of poet Jibanananda Das, the film has sparked thoughtful discussions online.

One viewer commented that making a film on a subject like “Bonolota Sen” required courage and artistic commitment. The audience member noted that not everyone would immediately understand or appreciate such a work, just as Jibanananda Das himself was not fully recognised during his lifetime. Yet, the enduring popularity of his poetry demonstrates how time ultimately rewards artistic excellence.

Meanwhile, action lovers are gravitating toward “Malik”, directed by Saif Chandan and starring Arifin Shuvoo and Bidya Sinha Saha Mim. The high-octane action drama has become a major attraction for fans of the genre.

Audience have particularly praised Arifin Shuvoo’s transformation into a powerful action hero.   Mim has also been appreciated for her performance, with viewers noting that the role allowed her to showcase a different side of her acting abilities. Her on-screen chemistry with Shuvoo has further enhanced the film’s appeal.

Another film is “Masud Rana”, directed by Saikat Nasir, surprised industry observers by announcing its release shortly before Eid. Newcomer Russell Rana takes on the challenging role of the legendary fictional detective “Masud Rana”, while Puja Chery stars opposite him as Sohana. The film has been produced by Impress Telefilm and Jaaz Multimedia.

The Eid lineup also includes “Tochnoch, starring Eamin Haque Bobby. Another release, “Pinik”, brings together Ador Azad and Shobnom Bubly under the direction of Zahid Jewel. Badiul Alam Khokon-directed film “Officer” has also been released. The film stars D A Tayeb, Mahiya Mahi, Irtiza Afi, Misha Showdagar and others.

With romance, action, thrillers, literary adaptations and socially driven stories all competing for audience attention, this Eid-ul-Azha offers movie lovers an impressive range of choices.
