Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Thursday that efforts are underway to bring back those accused in the Osman Hadi murder case from India under the existing extradition treaty between the two countries.
“A formal request has been sent through diplomatic channels via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to secure the return of the accused in the Osman Hadi murder case. The process of handing them over to Bangladesh under the prisoner exchange agreement is ongoing,” he told reporters after paying tribute to the martyred police personnel of the Liberation War.
He laid wreaths at the Rajarbagh Police Memorial in the capital on the occasion of Independence and National Day.
He added, “On the night of 25 March 1971, the first massacre began at Rajarbagh Police Lines. It was in this context that the declaration of independence emerged. Major Ziaur Rahman, upon learning of the massacre, declared a revolt in Chattogram and, on 27 March, formally announced independence from the Kalurghat radio station, seeking support from the international community.”
He described this as the “true history” of Bangladesh’s independence.
Recalling the sacrifices of the martyrs, the home minister said, “The Liberation War began with the bloodshed of police personnel at Rajarbagh. The nation will remember their sacrifice with deep respect for generations to come.”
