Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu on Monday said that the government is taking effective initiatives to implement the Teesta project to boost development in the region.

“The current government will work to eliminate budget disparities and ensure balanced development in the Rangpur region,” he said in a press briefing in the afternoon.

The briefing was held following a meeting with Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), divisional officials and political leaders of the eight districts under Rangpur Division at the office of the Rangpur Divisional Commissioner around 2pm.

Speaking to reporters, Dulu said he had long been involved in the movement for the implementation of the Teesta Mega Plan. He said discussions were held on a 180-day development plan for each district in the division.

“There has been discrimination against Rangpur in the past, which has created frustration among the people. We will ensure that Rangpur does not face any discrimination in the future,” he said.

Describing himself as “a child of Rangpur,” the minister said he would work to ensure fair budget allocations for the region. Referring to the Prime Minister’s pre-election visit to Rangpur, he said the head of government had described the region as one of great potential.

“We will establish industries here to generate employment and ensure Rangpur does not lag behind,” he said, highlighting the region’s strong contribution to national food production, availability of land and labour, and stable law and order situation.

Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Shahidul Islam, DIG (Range) Aminul Islam, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Majid Ali, along with DCs, SPs and other senior officials of the division, were present at the meeting. Top BNP leaders, including Rangpur Metropolitan BNP Convener Shamsuzzaman Sham, also attended.

During the meeting, the minister discussed law and order, the drug situation and other administrative issues, and issued directives to the concerned authorities.
