BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday criticised retired Major Akhtar, saying he had not followed party discipline even when he was a member of the BNP.
He made the remarks while speaking at a prize-giving ceremony and discussion organised by Komol Kuri at the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) auditorium of Dhaka University on 9 October.
Referring to Akhtar’s activities, Rizvi said Jamaat itself would take action against him if he engaged in any such activities warranting disciplinary measures.
Speaking about an unpleasant incident at an airport, Rizvi said any irregularities or mismanagement there could be protested through a press conference. However, he said confronting military officers and staff on duty or physically assaulting them was a punishable offence under the law.
At the same event, Rizvi criticised threats to suspend remittance transfers, questioning what the opposition wanted to achieve through such a move and whether there was any hidden plan behind it.
He said expatriate Bangladeshis did not belong to any single political party and that their remittances were a key driver of the national economy and the livelihoods of millions of families.
Describing threats to stop remittances as anti-national, anti-humanitarian and contrary to the interests of the people, Rizvi said expatriates sent money not only to support the government but also to provide for their families.
He said seeking to halt a key driving force of the national economy could never be considered politics in the national interest.
