Three BNP leaders, including President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s younger brother Mirza Faisal Amin, on Tuesday collected party nomination forms for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election.

The other aspirants are district BNP Vice-Presidents Obaidullah Masud and Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury (Namr).

The sale of nomination forms began at 11am at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan, said BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan.

The forms will be submitted on Wednesday, while the party’s Standing Committee, acting as the nomination board, is scheduled to finalise the candidate on 18 September.

The seat fell vacant after Mirza Fakhrul was elected President. The Election Commission has fixed 29 October for the by-election.

Faisal Amin is Thakurgaon district BNP president and a former mayor of Thakurgaon municipality. Masud and Namr are district BNP vice-presidents.

Masud is a former Chhatra Dal leader and former vice-president and general secretary of Thakurgaon Government College Students’ Union. Namr is a former chairman of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila Parishad and former general secretary of Thakurgaon district Jatiya Party.

Faisal Amin and Mirza Fakhrul’s elder daughter Mirza Shamaruh had been locally discussed as possible successors in the constituency. However, Shamaruh did not collect a party nomination form.
