The 11-party
opposition alliance, led by Jamaat-e-Islami, has announced a Dhaka-Rangpur long
march on next Saturday, the second such demonstration within two weeks, to
press home its demands including implementation of the July Charter in its
complete form and the people’s referendum in this regard.
Hamidur
Rahman Azad, coordinator of the alliance and Jamaat assistant secretary
general, announced the new long march at a press conference held at the
Opposition Leader’s official residence in the capital on Sunday.
While revealing
the demonstration plans, Hamidur Rahman Azad claimed that the BNP government
has started to “feel the pressure” from the long march programmes.
This “pressure,” he claimed, became “evident” when the prime minister and the leader of the house, Tarique Rahman, mentioned the first long march after it was staged on the Dhaka-Chattogram route on 5 September.
