Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar on Friday alleged that efforts were underway to bring the Awami League (AL) back into politics in a “refined and new form”, with some people within the government and groups linked to Delhi involved in the process.
He made the allegation while speaking as a
special guest at a convention of Jamaat’s rukon (council members) in Khulna
city.
Parwar said the July uprising was not the
achievement of any individual or political party, but the result of sacrifices
by students and people and what he described as the grace of Allah.
He said the movement had created an
opportunity to build a Bangladesh free from corruption, repression,
discrimination, politicisation and money laundering.
“If the anti-fascist political forces remain
united, it will not be easy for the Awami League to make a political comeback,”
he said.
The Jamaat leader also questioned the
political character of the interim government, claiming that some people in key
positions had links to leftist politics and that allegations of corruption had
been raised against several ministers.
He alleged that left-leaning political
ideology had long influenced the country’s administration, judiciary and
various state institutions, claiming the Awami League had patronised such
forces for years.
Referring to the recent Dhaka University
Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, Parwar said the success of Islami
Chhatra Shibir reflected growing support among young people for politics based
on Islamic values.
Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam
attended the convention as the chief guest. The convention was organised by
Khulna city Jamaat at the Al-Faruk Society auditorium, with city Jamaat Ameer
Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman in the chair.
