BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed has been appointed to the party’s National Standing Committee, its highest policymaking body.
The party announced his appointment in a press
release issued on Saturday, saying the decision was taken to strengthen the
party’s organisational activities and in line with its internal decisions.
Earlier, after the BNP came to power, Rizvi was
appointed on 17 February as an adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman with
the rank of a minister. He was also serving as the party’s senior joint
secretary general.
Early life
Rizvi’s ancestral home is in Kurigram. He obtained
master’s degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies and History from
Rajshahi University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in law.
Political career
Rizvi began his political career in student politics
after completing higher secondary education, joining the left-leaning
Revolutionary Students Union. He served as general secretary of the
organisation’s Rajshahi Government College unit.
Later, after the formation of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra
Dal, he joined the organisation and became publicity secretary of its Rajshahi
University unit. He subsequently served as general secretary of the university
unit and later became central president of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
In the 1989 Rajshahi University Central Students’
Union (Rucsu) election, Rizvi was elected vice-president (VP), a position he
held until 1990.
At the BNP’s sixth national council on 19 March
2016, he was elected senior joint secretary general of the party.
During the 2026 national parliamentary election,
Rizvi served as member secretary of the BNP’s Election Management Committee.
His appointment to the National Standing Committee
marks another significant step in his long political career, which began in
student politics and has taken him to one of the BNP’s highest policymaking
positions.
